Estimates suggest that by the year 2050, agriculture will need to increase food
production by 70 percent to feed the growing global population. Genetically Modified
(GM) crops are proving an important resource for reaching this critical goal. A recent
report, GM Crops: Global Socio-Economic and Environmental Impacts 1996–2011,* by Graham Brookes and Peter Barfoot, shows the game-changing nature of these
products. As scientists build on innovative biotech traits for challenges such as water
optimization and rootworm control, the benefits of GM crops will continue to grow.
